Irish Heritage Trail #13
Patrick Andrew Collins monument

Born in Fermoy, County Cork, Patrick Collins (1844-1905) was the second Irish-born mayor in Boston’s history (Hugh O’Brien was the first, elected in 1883). As a youth Collins used to walk to the Boston Public Library from South Boston after working all day as an upholster, to study for his classes at Harvard. As mayor, his fiscal conservatism endeared him to the Brahmin establishment, who were ever suspicious of the Irish. He was the first candidate in Boston’s history to sweep every ward in an election. He was mayor from 1902 to 1905. The statue was commissioned to husband and wife artists Henry and Theo Kitson, and unveiled in 1908.
